Meet Sónia Vasconcelos

How would you describe our culture to someone who has never worked with us?

When asked about the superhero/heroine and the song that best characterizes us in a previous People Survey, "The Incredibles" and "With a Little Help of My Friends" were the most chosen.

Our people are generally caring and inclusive, dedicated to creating a positive and welcoming environment. We believe in acting as team players who promote and value teamwork, collaboration, open communication, learning, and sharing.

We are recognized as experienced professionals committed to delivering quality and innovation. We pride ourselves on being reliable, resilient, adaptable, solution-oriented, and focused on achieving our goals.

At the same time, we value flexibility and autonomy in embracing challenges. We strive for excellence while maintaining a healthy work environment and aiming for a good work-life balance.

What’s a common myth about organizational culture that you would like to debunk? Does it apply to Celfocus?

I'm not sure about the assertiveness in my answer. However, what I want to say is that organizational culture is not about words or statements written on the walls.

Culture drives success and it’s about the way we act consistently, making every decision, and interacting with everyone, day in and day out. It's this culture that empowers us to make responsible decisions and take ownership of our actions.

Returning to myths, I confirm the most well-known one as a non-myth. Every successful strategy requires the right culture, which is dependent on what we want to achieve and what the starting point is. Culture will determine how we will pursue those goals, guiding us all the way. The right culture is the one that leads us to sustainable results, considering all stakeholders. And that's because 'culture eats strategy for breakfast,' and that is a non-myth.

If we had to radically change the company culture tomorrow, what’s the first value you would make sure to include? Why?

Candidness.

At first, I considered “bluntness,” but that can be perceived as rude, and that is not my intention. Being candid is about the capacity and the courage to openly tell what we are genuinely thinking, especially about a difficult or uncomfortable subject, in a respectful way. Considering other people’s beliefs without necessarily being polite.

Younger people know how to do it better than the not-so-young people. We, the not-so-young, should learn more from them.

What role do our people, the Celfies, play in shaping and maintaining our culture?

As Celfies we play a critical role in shaping the culture, through the way we interact and make decisions.

Being a Celfie means embodying Celfocus’ way of being and doing. Celfies embrace our sense of community, teamwork, continuous learning, solution-driven mindset, and client focus.

One of the most significant ways Celfies shape our culture is through the exchange of trustworthy feedback among team members and managers.  A good example is our internal surveys which serve as a tool to clearly express what is expected and acceptable and what is not.

How can we ensure that diversity and social responsibility aren’t just buzzwords but something that truly shapes our culture and decisions?

By intentionally embracing diversity and inclusion in how we interact, discuss, and decide until the day it naturally happens. It is easier to surround ourselves with people who think and act similarly. But are the outcomes the best?

Diverse and multidisciplinary thinking, as well as open and safe discussions, often bring fresh ideas to the table, promoting better solutions. Usually, it takes more time, negotiation efforts, and the ability to find agreements. But, in the end, the outcomes are more innovative, more efficient, or more profitable.

Integrating social responsibility into the decision-making process not only brings sustainability to the equation but also empowers us to make a positive impact. It's the cherry on top of the cake.

Celfocus made a significant decision to contribute to one of society's most critical pillars: education. As a company rooted in the IT industry, we focused on Education in STEM areas. Recognizing the underrepresentation of women in these fields, we sought out programs that address these issues. With a clear vision and intentional direction, we are ready to contribute to these programs, knowing their positive impact on our society and industry.

Another intentional decision we made was to actively integrate people with disabilities into our workforce. We have been pursuing this commitment by partnering with different associations and related stakeholders. It's important to clarify that our commitment to diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility is not just a People & Culture initiative. It's a company-wide effort. This is what it means to Act with Purpose - a shared intention that unites us all as Celfies.
