A roadmap for CSPs that want to evolve from a more traditional BI approach to embrace and reap the benefits offered by Big Data

Wider than the sky is an unprecedented and interactive exhibition built in the Main Gallery of the Gulbenkian Foundation, in Lisbon, Portugal.

According to the exhibition, which by the way is open until June 2019, presentation leaflet “The title is inspired on a poem by Emily Dickinson, “The brain is wider than the sky” in which the American poet also describes the human brain as “deeper than the sea” and “with the just weight of God”. It is this extraordinary complexity that the exhibition seeks to celebrate across its multiple representations in science, the arts and philosophy".

Approximately 1336 gr, representing only 2% of the total body weigh it encapsulates a world of wonder and possibilities. The brain is the central organ of the human nervous system and its complexity remains a mystery to the human kind.

An important, world renowned Portuguese neuroscientist, António Damasio, has had a deep impact on the current understanding of the neural systems, which underlie memory, language, consciousness by showing that emotions play a central role in social cognition and decision-making.

Rationality and emotions, although very different dimensions, coexist in the brain, playing different roles but having a pivotal role in the decision-making process.

The brain never stops amazing us from the simplest tasks such as curling our toes, the longest neuron in our body, to figuring out how to get to the moon.

The concept of the brain has also been mimicked to the corporate world. Normally, it sits at the top and has pretty much the same responsibilities, although, for the most part, not the same mystery.

In a constant evolving business context with so many variables, data availability and complexity, the human brain is not enough to keep up. Organizations and also CSPs are, more and more, relying on technology to help them understand the present and prepare for the future. In this domain, Analytics has proved its value and Celfocus provides an end-to-end support to CSPs’ Big Data initiatives.

Analytics helps CSPs get new insights and tackle different business challenges, supported by a plethora of new tools and technologies, democratizing access to information across the organisation, impacting the entire value chain.

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all roadmap when it comes to analytics deployment. Based on the business requirements and use cases, some solutions and technologies are more appropriate than others. For example, Data Visualization is best suited to extract knowledge from a visual representation of data through an interactive interface; when the goal is to process and store large data volumes that cannot be managed by a regular database, Big Data is the best fit.

Analytics has a transversal impact across domains, covering from network to business, operations, IT and management. There are many moving parts, stakeholders and priorities are pivotal to having the right skill set and technical competences.

Big Data and analytics have become common in every CSP IT domain. Their reach covers distinct areas, such as customer experience and network monitoring. Celfocus Analytics’ experience spans across different IT domains. Providing a 360º customer view, predicting and minimizing TV service breakdowns or predicting network capacity bottlenecks, these are just some examples of the projects already in production, using different analytics technologies supported by accelerators, developed by Celfocus.
