What’s it like to spend 23 hours a day in a cell for days, weeks, months, or even years?

6x9 is the Guardian's first virtual reality experience, which places you inside a US solitary confinement prison cell and tells the story of the psychological damage that can ensue from isolation. The purpose of 6×9 is to demonstrate, using immersive journalism, how being in long-term solitary can affect the mind of prisoners held in segregation around the world, an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 of them in the United States alone.

Virtual reality can make you feel that you are in someone else’s shoes – a significant development for journalism, which tends to report from the third person. Read more and discover how it works here.
