Is a poem more than a combination of letters? Is creativity a gift? Can everyone be creative? Can we learn to be creative? Can we lose our creativity?
In reality, many questions arise when we are confronted with that mysterious thing called creativity. Many of us simply say we are not creative and it’s a done deal! Others consider themselves creative but are quickly discouraged when they browse the internet and compare their abilities with 99,99% of humanity. A frustration to say the least, completely unfair!
First of all, the duration of an artistic creation depends on the author’s approval. However, for any creation to be viable, it also depends on others’ approval, and that makes the creative process transactional. A creative product needs consumers.
The feasibility of a work of art is one of humanity’s greatest challenges – combining genius with opportunity, a good idea with its implementation. Engineers understand this equation: How is it done? Does it work? Will it be successful? Does it solve a problem?
Before labelling ourselves as creative or not, we must think of the things we can and want to create - be it a poem, a process, an algorithm. Everything is valid as long as it is worthwhile, for ourselves and others.
Learning to be creative depends of believing in what is done... and sometimes magic happens.
